Cleaning plays an essential role in every organisation. It protects people, maintains standards and keeps businesses operating. Yet despite products moving across multiple sites, contracts and teams every day, cleaning remains one of the least visible areas of business operations:

Why Cleaning Data Matters Now

The expectations placed on large organisations are changing. Qualifying UK businesses already report energy use and associated emissions through the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting framework. The Government has also published the new UK Sustainability Reporting Standards for voluntary use, while considering whether reporting requirements should be introduced for certain organisations. Alongside formal reporting, customers, investors, tender teams and supply-chain partners increasingly expect environmental claims to be supported by clear evidence.

Under the CMA Green Claims Code, environmental claims must be accurate, clear and capable of being substantiated.This direction of travel creates a simple challenge: businesses need better data from their suppliers. That is particularly important for Scope 3, the indirect emissions produced across an organisation’s value chain. Although Scope 3 reporting remains largely voluntary for many UK businesses, the GHG Protocol states that it can represent more than 90% of a company’s combined Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. Purchased products and services form part of that picture, including the cleaning solutions used across an organisation’s estate. However, cleaning carbon data has traditionally been difficult to access, compare and connect to actual purchasing activity. Broad averages and isolated product claims may indicate that one solution is “greener”, but they do not necessarily give a business the evidence needed to understand its own impact.

Carbon Data That Considers the Complete Picture

Not all cleaning carbon figures are created on the same basis. Some rely on broad industry averages. Others cover only selected stages of a product’s life cycle, potentially presenting an incomplete picture of its overall impact.

BioHygiene takes a cradle-to-grave approach. Product carbon footprints consider raw materials, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, use and end of life. Figures are calculated per litre of product as sold, using consistent boundaries aligned with ISO 14067 and the GHG Protocol Product Standard.Information obtained directly from suppliers and manufacturers is prioritised.

Where direct data is unavailable, appropriate recognised datasets or averages may be used, with the methodology and data coverage made clear. BioMetrix connects this product-level carbon evidence with validated distributor purchasing information. This gives customers more specific cleaning-related data that can support supplier engagement, procurement decisions and wider Scope 3 conversations. It does not replace an organisation’s complete carbon inventory. It helps fill an important gap within it.

Understanding the Impact of a Different Choice

BioMetrix also makes estimated avoided emissions visible. Avoided emissions show the calculated difference between the cradle-to-grave emissions of a BioHygiene product and a defined, modelled petrochemical equivalent performing the same function. In practical terms, this helps a business understand the potential carbon difference created by choosing a BioHygiene solution rather than the defined alternative. Sometimes informally referred to as “Scope 4”, avoided emissions are not an official GHG Protocol scope. They must be reported separately from an organisation’s Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory and cannot be used to cancel or deduct its reported emissions.

They can, however, provide valuable decision-making evidence. When assessed using a realistic alternative, consistent life-cycle boundaries and a like-for-like measurement, avoided emissions can help procurement and sustainability teams compare solutions and understand how product choices may support wider carbon-reduction ambitions. Within BioMetrix, customers can explore estimated avoided emissions across defined reporting periods and participating contracts and sites, alongside total product-related CO₂e and purchasing information.This allows businesses to see both sides of the picture: the impact associated with the products they purchase and the estimated difference compared with the defined alternative.
