Silage Inoculants

AgriPrep-transparent

Maximise Production From Forage

Maximising production from forage is the key to profitable livestock production. Whether a dairy, beef or sheep farmer, the use of a proven inoculant is an essential element towards this end.

Agriprep has developed a range of highly effective forage inoculants to accommodate the full spectrum of dry matters for all forage types: these include grass, maize, wholecrop, lucerne, and specialist high protein crops. The objectives are to:

  • reduce waste
  • achieve a complete and even fermentation
  • keep the forage cool and stable in the clamp
  • improve digestibility and increase dry matter (DM) intake

How Does Our Technology Work?

Silage consists of grass, wholecrop cereals, maize or similar crops which have been chopped and fermented in airtight silos in order to preserve the forage and allow it to be fed out to animals over rest of the year. The use of silage inoculants, containing certain free enzymes and high levels of certain lactic acid bacteria, will greatly improve silage quality and promote aerobic stability.

Free B-glucanase and xylanase enzymes break down cellulose and hemicellulose, opening up plant fibres and providing a greater surface area for microbial attack. Along with free amylase which breaks down starch, this also provides higher levels of sugar for subsequent fermentation.

Homofermentative lactic acid bacteria such as Lactobacillus plantarum, Pediococcus pentosaceus and Enterococcus faecium ferment sugars to lactic acid, rapidly reducing the pH of the silage and inhibiting spoilage organisms which would otherwise result in a poor fermentation profile.

In higher dry matter silages, prone to the growth of yeasts, moulds and other fungi, UK- and EU-approved heterofermentative bacteria (L. buchneri, L. brevis and L. keferi) complete the reaction. These species ferment sugars to lactic and acetic acids, L. buchneri being particularly important as the acetic acid it produces provides outstanding aerobic stability in the clamp and upon opening and feed out.

Our Product Range

Competition is fierce in the inoculant market and enthusiasm for a sale can sometimes lead to questionable claims being made. Agriprep follows the science: efficacy is the driving force behind our products. Rigorous scrutiny and quality control measures ensure our silage inoculants deliver the performance level required by the modern livestock farmer.

BioHygiene All Surfaces & Floor Cleaner 5L-1

Cool-IT for Maize

A top biological product for maize growers, preventing spoilage and enhancing energy in the rumen without losing dry matter.

BioHygiene All Surfaces & Floor Cleaner 5L-1

Grass 3-Fold

A high-quality silage additive for grass with over 25% dry matter, featuring P. pentosaceus and two strains, L. buchneri and L. kefiri, to enhance stability and prevent dry matter loss. Ideal for grass silage systems sensitive to dry matter loss.

BioHygiene All Surfaces & Floor Cleaner 5L-1

Homofermenter 100

A biological silage additive for grass with less than 26% dry matter, containing Lactobacillus plantarum and Pediococcus pentosaceus. It is used for lower DM silage to quickly lower pH, control fermentation, reduce nutrient loss, and prevent unwanted organisms and protein breakdown.

BioHygiene All Surfaces & Floor Cleaner 5L-1

Midfield

This biological silage additive is designed for grass with less than 33% dry matter. It uses specific strains of bacteria to ensure efficient fermentation and aerobic stability, reducing nutrient loss and preventing unwanted organisms. The product is effective for lower dry matter grasses and is a popular choice in the Agriprep range.

Quality Assurance

Agriprep is certified to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and the UFAS Merchants scheme, and products are manufactured at our dedicated FAMI-QS facility. Some products are also approved by Organic Farmers & Growers, for use in organic systems.

Products are subject to full quality control in our laboratory which is staffed by PhD and graduate microbiologists and chemists. The farmer can therefore be assured of the quality of the products and their compliance with Feed Hygiene Regulations.
